If you ever want to see something truly terrifying

If you ever want to see something truly terrifying, take a walk around any lot selling mass produced trailers…. This one really took the cake for me. An aluminum trailer, welded with wire feed units. These gate/ramp hinges were essentially hot glued to the trailer frame, one of the four had about 1/4 of penetration. The rest literally laid on the base metal without any true bonding. THIS is why proper training in the trades matter. Whoever welded this, and whoever quality checked it (if that was done at all), was 100% okay with this traveling down the highway next to your family. I don’t know it’s country of origin, and that really doesn’t matter. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

We removed and re welded all of the hinges, using GTAW (TiG) so I can actually see the penetration of the weld. I added addition welds across the top of each hinge, as they were only welded on the sides. Most importantly, I’ll stand behind this and IF any of the welds fail, I’ll fix them. Period.

As we start building some of our own trailers, my stress goes down a little when I stop and think about the standards we aim for, compared to what seems to be acceptable. @kmfabricationllc and I will NEVER let something like this come out of our little shop. Straight, square, quality welds, heat control…. These all matter. So many of these high production shops seem to forget that. 🤦‍♂️

Sometimes, the hardest part about growth is stepping outside of your comfort zone. While the ladders we made for a local educational institution were simple, the trailer we have taken on is not. Built from the ground up, this 18 foot, 14k lb GVWR trailer will be customized for a local construction company. It’s a large build, and I am excited to see it finished.

Often times jobs like this get me trapped in my own head, and drive my anxiety sky high. Thankfully, having someone with the talent level of @kmfabricationllc makes it a lot easier. Her always level head and logical thought process helps me realize we can tackle anything. Couple that with incredible equipment like @everlastwelders , and the sky is the limit. Stay tuned over the next few weeks as this project grows, and we add even more to our motorcycle side of the house!!

We have been hard at it the last couple of weeks. @kmfabricationllc and I are pushing ourselves and stepping into some MUCH bigger projects over the next few weeks. While she has continued to lay down gorgeous work, I have been busy behind the scenes.

In between all the chaos, I occasionally still get to do some of my favorite work. Detail matters. This is some of the most fun and challenging work I get to do. This tiny weld is a great reminder of why I love doing this.
